The Government will set out plans next week for a further easing of restrictions on travel, aviation, hospitality, sport and live events. A Cabinet meeting is expected to take place next Friday to make the final decisions for reopening during June and to sketch out plans for July. The Government aims to set out how international travel can reopen over the summer using the framework of the EU Digital Green Certificate.
This evening the European Parliament and EU member states agreed a deal that will allow for anybody living in the EU's 27 countries to secure a digital health pass by the end of June that displays their vaccination status, results of Covid-19 tests or whether they have recovered from a coronavirus infection. Key to the Government's plan to reintroduce international travel is a plan to revise the mandatory hotel quarantine system that is due to expire next month and this is currently being examined by officials. Government ministers have indicated the system will be extended as there is concern about the new Indian variants. Several senior Government members have also signaled that a pathway must be set out for the return of aviation, particularly following the Aer Lingus cuts to its operations at Shannon and Cork.
