Bewley's tea and coffee is making significant strides towards a greener future with their always evolving sustainability plans. They are the first major coffee supplier to introduce a fully recyclable bag for their 1KG foodservice coffee beans which will come into circulation across foodservice by August 2023. This will result in Bewley’s reducing their carbon footprint whilst embracing eco-friendly packaging solutions. By adopting this new recyclable packaging, Bewley's estimates that they will divert more than 10 tonnes of packaging from ending up in landfills each year. Instead, this waste will be directed into recyclable and renewable waste management streams, ensuring a much more environmentally friendly approach.
In addition to reducing landfill waste, the shift to recyclable bags has a substantial positive effect on carbon emissions. The carbon footprint of Bewley's new recyclable packaging is only a quarter of the impact of foil-lined bags, measured in terms of carbon dioxide equivalent per kilogram (CO2e/KG). This significant reduction in carbon emissions showcases Bewley's commitment to combatting climate change and promoting sustainable practices throughout the foodservice industry. Over the last five years, Bewley’s have paid €1.4 million in Fairtrade premiums and the business purchases 45% of the Fairtrade coffee in Ireland and just under 1% of Fairtrade coffee globally.
